Katherine Almy began a bookkeeping consulting business in 2012 and, finding more demand than one person could cover, gathered several others who work their own accounts while trading skills and information — the collective of independent bookkeepers that now serves businesses across Humboldt County. Almy is semi-retired, keeps a small number of clients, and consults with new business owners or anyone wanting hands-on help with QuickBooks Online. Connie Smith, part of the group since 2016, prepares payroll, monthly financial statements, bank reconciliations, bill paying and annual reports, for construction, retail and nonprofit clients among others. Molly Steele runs client books in QuickBooks Online and came to the work from business networking at the Arcata Chamber of Commerce, with a biology and botany degree from Humboldt State. Payroll covers withholding, tax payments and federal and state filings. Nothing is billed by the hour.
