Thomas A. Carlson started the practice in 2001 and handles tax, accounting and consulting work for clients across Placer and Sacramento counties; he also teaches accounting at American River College and holds a business administration degree in accounting from California State University, Chico. Bookkeeping runs monthly or quarterly, with journal entries, bank and credit card reconciliations, fixed asset records and a full set of statements each month, followed by a discussion of the numbers at every close and again quarterly and annually. The books kept here belong to physicians, restaurants, mechanics and real estate brokers. Beyond returns and planning, the firm forms partnerships and LLCs, works on estate strategies such as charitable trusts and family limited partnerships, weighs employee against independent contractor for payroll, and takes on audit representation and offers in compromise. Darlene Carlson, an accountant and notary public with the firm since 2001, was previously an accountant at Recology and CFO at Miyamoto International, and taught school for fifteen years before that.
