SAP S/4HANA Finance Review: Now SAP Cloud ERP, With a 2027 Deadline Behind It

SAP S/4HANA, now marketed as SAP Cloud ERP, is enterprise ERP with no public price. The ECC deadlines, RISE and GROW, and who should look elsewhere.

SAP S/4HANA is SAP’s enterprise ERP, and its finance capabilities are now marketed under the name SAP Cloud ERP, in a standardized public cloud edition and a private cloud edition SAP manages for you. It is built for large organizations, and above all for companies still running SAP ECC, whose mainstream maintenance ends at the end of 2027. This SAP S/4HANA Finance review is blunt about fit: if you are not already an SAP shop or a large enterprise, it is almost certainly more system and more cost than you need, and SAP publishes no price to help you judge.

The short version: for an ECC customer, the question is not whether to move but how and when, and RISE with SAP is the route SAP has built for that. For a small or mid-sized business, the relevant SAP product is SAP Business One, a different system, or one of the options in our software guide and NetSuite alternatives.

What SAP S/4HANA is called now

SAP runs old and new names side by side, which makes the product harder to research than it should be. On SAP’s own pages today:

  • SAP Cloud ERP is the title of the S/4HANA product page, which describes SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition as “a flexible ERP solution with embedded AI to drive productivity and efficiency across your finance, supply chain, HR, and sales.”
  • SAP Cloud ERP Private is the destination of RISE with SAP, which SAP describes as “a guided, agent-led path from on-premises SAP ERP (ECC or S/4HANA) to SAP Cloud ERP Private.”
  • SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition still appears in SAP resources and on SAP News.

SAP’s pages do not say in so many words that SAP Cloud ERP Private is the new name for S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, though they describe the same kind of offering. When you talk to SAP or a partner, confirm which edition a proposal covers: public edition is highly standardized, and private edition allows the extensibility and reach of an on-premises system. “S/4HANA Finance,” a name buyers still search for, is not a separate product today; SAP markets finance as part of SAP Cloud ERP and under its Financial Management pages.

S/4HANA is not SAP Business One

SAP sells two very different ERPs, and the names make it easy to research the wrong one.

If you run a single company that makes or distributes goods and have been told you need “SAP,” our SAP Business One review and SAP Business One pricing are the pages to read. S/4HANA begins where Business One ends: multiple entities and countries, enterprise controls and a finance function large enough to run a major program.

What SAP S/4HANA does

Finance

SAP says S/4HANA Cloud “improves financial management by enabling compliant, insight-driven finance across revenue, spend, and cash,” with AI embedded in end-to-end processes. Its financial management pages organize the work by process rather than by module: record-to-report, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, reconciliation, invoice processing and extended planning and analysis. These are SAP’s framings. What a given contract includes depends on the edition and the scope a partner proposes, so ask for the scope document rather than relying on the marketing categories.

The rest of the suite

Beyond finance, SAP describes the public edition as covering supply chain, HR and sales, with preconfigured processes that SAP says span “over 25 industries and over 190 countries.” For a multinational, that localization claim is a large part of the case for SAP.

AI and Joule

SAP’s financial management pages center on Joule, its AI assistant, describing “Joule Assistants” that “orchestrate Joule Agents” for forecasting, performance alignment and compliance. On private edition through RISE, SAP offers “activation services for up to three Joule Assistants at no additional cost,” and all Joule Assistants with its Max Success Plan. Those are SAP’s terms; what each assistant does in your processes is a demo question.

Security and compliance

SAP’s Trust Center says SAP is “certified according to ISO 27001, ISO 22301, and BS 10012,” and that SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports are available through its compliance finder, adding that “The SOC 1 report covers all live customer systems during the audit cycle.” Which reports cover the specific cloud ERP edition you buy is set out in that finder, so have your security team pull them for the exact service.

The ECC maintenance deadline

For many organizations looking at S/4HANA, the deciding fact is a date. SAP’s published maintenance commitments for SAP Business Suite 7, whose core applications include SAP ERP 6.0 (ECC), are:

PeriodWhat SAP says
Through the end of 2027Mainstream maintenance for Business Suite 7 core applications, including SAP ERP 6.0
2028 to the end of 2030Optional extended maintenance at “a premium of two percentage points on the existing maintenance basis”
From 2028, without extended maintenanceAutomatic transfer to customer-specific maintenance, covering “problem solving for known issues at unchanged fees”
2031 to 2033SAP ERP, private edition, transition option: a time-bound subscription for business continuity, with conditions
To the end of 2040SAP’s maintenance commitment for S/4HANA

The 2031 to 2033 transition option is narrower than its headline. SAP News sets the conditions: systems must be migrated to SAP ERP, private edition on SAP HANA before December 31, 2030; it runs on HANA only, with a 2 TB minimum; it is available only with the Max Success Plan; and it is priced at an uplift, stated as “a standard 20 percent uplift” for customers signing in 2026. Eligibility is set out in SAP Note 3591251. In other words, it buys time for customers already committed to RISE, not an escape from the decision.

RISE with SAP and SAP GROW

SAP sells cloud ERP through two programs, and which one applies depends on where you start.

RISE with SAP is for companies with an existing SAP ERP. SAP’s words are “Transform your on-premises ERP to the cloud”: a move from ECC or on-premises S/4HANA to SAP Cloud ERP Private, “a trusted, SAP-managed cloud environment.” SAP says RISE combines “a proven methodology, expert guidance, and an agent-led toolchain,” including seven AI-enabled migration assistants (System Analysis, Custom Code, Data Management, Configuration, Test Management, Rollout and Project Management) and Business Transformation Management tools.

SAP GROW is for companies starting fresh on cloud ERP. SAP pitches it as “an AI cloud ERP built for companies of any size,” where you “start with finance, supply chain, or HR and activate more capabilities as needed.” SAP says “simplified packages offer transparent, fixed-scope pricing,” though it publishes no figures, and that under SAP GROW Fast “qualified partners deliver a standardized implementation designed for rapid, low-risk go-lives.” On the product page SAP claims “30 days or less” for delivery of initial scope, with a footnote that “baseline activation time may vary,” a “50% decrease in implementation cost” and 40 to 60 percent quicker time-to-value. Those are SAP’s marketing claims, without a stated baseline; test them against partner references.

“Any size” is SAP’s phrase. In practice, a small business comparing GROW with mid-market systems should ask for a fixed-scope quote in writing, because nothing on SAP’s pages lets you compare it in advance.

SAP S/4HANA pricing

SAP publishes no list price for SAP Cloud ERP or S/4HANA as of September 2026. The product page has a pricing heading but no figures, and describes a “subscription-based model for lower, predictable costs.” Software Connect, which does publish reported figures for some enterprise systems, states that “SAP does not have a standardized public pricing model for its Cloud ERP” and gives no range. No named source publishes a current range, so none is given here.

What is on the record:

  • Extended ECC maintenance from 2028 to 2030 costs two percentage points more than the existing maintenance basis, per SAP.
  • The 2031 to 2033 transition option carries a standard 20 percent uplift for 2026 sign-ups, per SAP News.
  • Support-fee increases under SAP’s 2026 policy are tied to inflation with a 5 percent ceiling for ECC and S/4HANA, according to licensing adviser Redress Compliance rather than SAP.
  • GROW packages are described by SAP as fixed-scope, without published prices.

No named source publishes a current implementation cost range for a RISE move or a GROW project either. Get more than one proposal, and have each partner price the same scope.

Limitations

  • No public price, and no reported range. Budgeting starts with a sales process.
  • Naming is inconsistent. SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Cloud ERP Private and S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition all appear on SAP’s pages; confirm the edition in every proposal.
  • The ECC timeline constrains negotiation. Customers who wait approach 2027 with fewer options and extended maintenance at a premium.
  • Implementation claims are vendor claims. SAP’s 30-day and 50 percent figures carry footnotes and no stated baseline.
  • Public edition is standardized by design. SAP positions private edition as the option with on-premises-level extensibility, and it is the larger commitment.
  • Sized for enterprises. The breadth, localization and program structure are overhead for a single-entity company.

Who SAP S/4HANA is for

S/4HANA fits:

  • Existing ECC customers, who have to choose a path before mainstream maintenance ends at the end of 2027.
  • Multinationals that need one ERP across many countries, entities and industries, with SAP’s localization.
  • Organizations whose finance, supply chain, HR and sales need to run on one enterprise system.

It is the wrong choice for most readers of this site. A small or mid-sized business should look at SAP Business One if it wants SAP, or at the mid-market systems in NetSuite alternatives and our accounting and ERP software guide.

How SAP S/4HANA compares

  • Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP: the closest like-for-like enterprise suite, also quote-only, with one reported figure of $625 per hosted named user a month.
  • Workday Financial Management: enterprise finance priced by the number of workers, strongest where Workday runs HR; no inventory module.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance: the one enterprise system here with a published price, $210 per user per month paid yearly, with a 20-license minimum.
  • SAP Business One: SAP’s small-business ERP, with production and MRP bundled and an on-premises option.
  • Oracle NetSuite: a mid-market cloud suite for companies that have outgrown small-business software but not reached enterprise scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SAP S/4HANA Finance still a product?

Not under that name. SAP now markets its cloud ERP as SAP Cloud ERP (S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition) and SAP Cloud ERP Private, with finance as part of the suite. “S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition” also still appears on SAP’s pages.

When does SAP ECC support end?

SAP provides mainstream maintenance for ECC (SAP ERP 6.0) until the end of 2027. Optional extended maintenance runs to the end of 2030 at a two-percentage-point premium, and a transition option from 2031 to 2033 is available only to customers who meet SAP’s conditions, including migration to SAP ERP, private edition on HANA before December 31, 2030.

What is the difference between RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP?

RISE moves an existing SAP ERP, ECC or on-premises S/4HANA, to SAP Cloud ERP Private, a cloud environment SAP manages. GROW, which SAP now brands SAP GROW, is for companies starting fresh on the public cloud edition, with fixed-scope packages and partner-led implementation.

How much does SAP S/4HANA cost?

SAP publishes no list price, and no named third party publishes a current range as of September 2026. SAP describes a subscription model; the known cost facts are the maintenance premiums and uplifts SAP attaches to ECC extensions.

Is SAP S/4HANA the same as SAP Business One?

No. Business One is SAP’s ERP for small businesses and the lower midmarket, sold through partners and available on-premises. S/4HANA is SAP’s enterprise suite, sold through RISE and GROW.
