Digits vs QuickBooks: Which Ledger Should You Run?
Digits Core is $100 a month with unlimited users. QuickBooks Plus is $140 for five. Where the AI ledger wins, and where it cannot go.

Digits is a general ledger that replaces QuickBooks rather than sitting on top of it, built, Digits says, so that categorization, reconciliation and posting happen continuously rather than at month end. QuickBooks Online is the ledger most US accountants already work in, with real inventory, payroll bundles and a large app marketplace behind it. The Digits vs QuickBooks decision usually turns on three things: whether you hold stock, how many people need a login, and how much of your accounting depends on software Digits has not shipped yet.
The short version: choose Digits if you run a service business with several people who need access and you want the books kept current without chasing them. Choose QuickBooks Online if you carry inventory, want payroll in the same subscription, or need inventory and project costing today rather than on a roadmap.

Pricing
Digits
| Plan | Monthly | Who Digits says it suits | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $65 | Solopreneurs and early-stage businesses | Available |
| Core | $100 | Small businesses and growing companies | Available |
| Pro | $250 | Scaling businesses with internal finance teams | Listed as coming soon |
The important line in that table is the last one. Digits prints the $250 Pro plan on its pricing page under a “Coming soon” label, so the range you can actually buy in September 2026 is $65 to $100 a month. Pro is described as adding custom reports, custom dashboards and budget versus actuals when it ships.
Billing is monthly and no annual discount is published. Each business needs its own subscription, so a founder with two entities pays twice. Digits publishes no transaction limits, revenue caps or expense caps on any plan, and states on its QuickBooks comparison page that users are unlimited and included, with team, advisors and auditors at no extra cost. That page is written by Digits and covers only what Digits chose to cover, so treat the framing as vendor material even where the underlying figures check out.
What forces an upgrade from Essentials to Core: dimensional accounting, meaning departments and locations, and automated schedules. Both start at Core.
Accounting firms are on a separate partner track with volume discounts. No firm prices are published.
QuickBooks Online
| Plan | Monthly | Users | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free (Solopreneur) | $0 | 1 | 2 invoices and 2 receipt uploads a month, no accountant access |
| Lite (Solopreneur) | $20 | 1 | Unlimited invoices, receipts and mileage |
| Simple Start | $38 | 1 | Expense categorization, invoicing and payments, bill pay, business reports |
| Essentials | $85 | 3 | Enhanced reports, employee time on invoices, lead collection |
| Plus | $140 | 5 | Inventory, project profitability, budgeting, 40 classes and locations |
| Advanced | $340 | 25 | Unlimited classes, custom workflows, Excel sync, batch processing |
Intuit raised Essentials, Plus and Advanced on August 1, 2026, leaving Free, Lite and Simple Start alone. Anything still quoting Plus at $115 predates that change. As a promotion in September 2026, Intuit lists 50 percent off for the first three months on the paid plans, after which the list prices above apply.
What forces an upgrade: user count first, then inventory and project profitability at Plus.
Real cost for a small business
Take a five-person consulting firm that wants departmental reporting and an outside accountant in the file.
- Digits: Core at $100 covers departments and locations, and every person plus the accountant is included. That is $100 a month, $1,200 a year.
- QuickBooks Online: Plus at $140 covers five users, classes and locations, and adds two free accountant seats on top. That is $140 a month, $1,680 a year.
Digits saves $480 a year on that shape of business. Now add a sixth person. Digits does not change: still $100. QuickBooks Plus is full at five users, so the next step is Advanced at $340, or $4,080 a year, and the gap widens to $2,880.
The arithmetic changes if you run two companies, since Digits charges per business: two entities on Core is 2 × $100 = $200 a month, or $2,400 a year. And a product business cannot use Digits at any price, because inventory is not part of it.
Digits’ own comparison page runs this calculation against QuickBooks Plus at $115, the price before August 1, 2026. The current figure is $140, so the gap today is wider than Digits’ page claims.
Where Digits is stronger
- People do not cost extra. Unlimited users on every plan, per Digits, against 1, 3, 5 and 25 by tier at QuickBooks. For a firm where six or eight people touch the books, this is the single biggest number in the comparison.
- Bill pay and invoicing are in the base price. Both are listed on every Digits plan, along with API access, bank and payroll connections, vendor and customer tracking, and roles and permissions.
- The automation is the product, not a bolt-on. Digits says it is built for machine learning, trained on more than 170 million real transactions, and that it books, reconciles and reviews continuously, then surfaces only the exceptions that need a human. That is the vendor’s claim rather than a measured result, and it is worth noting that Digits publishes no categorization-accuracy percentage of the kind some rivals advertise.
- An open interface. Digits publishes a full API with an OpenAPI spec and a sandbox, plus an MCP server for connecting tools such as Claude or ChatGPT, on terms it states as no partner fees, no paywalls and no marketplace restrictions. API access is listed on every plan, and Digits states that it is SOC 2 Type II compliant.
Where QuickBooks Online is stronger
- Inventory. QuickBooks Online values and tracks inventory from Plus upward. Digits offers no inventory module and names no inventory integration. For anyone who buys and resells goods, that ends the comparison.
- Payroll in the same subscription. Intuit sells payroll bundled with accounting, starting at $88 a month plus $6.50 per employee alongside Simple Start. Digits handles payroll by connecting to Gusto, so it is a second vendor and a second bill.
- Nothing important is still on a roadmap. Digits launched automated schedules in May 2026 with support for fixed assets and prepaid expenses, and its own announcement says revenue recognition and accrued expenses are coming soon. Projects, as a reporting dimension, is also marked coming soon, and so is the Pro plan. QuickBooks has project profitability, budgeting and 40 classes and locations on Plus today.
- The ecosystem. Digits’ own page acknowledges that Intuit markets more than 800 integrations, and lists its own named partners in single figures: Mercury, Ramp, Gusto, BILL, Stripe, Arc, Ignition, Karbon and Reach Reporting.
- Familiarity. QuickBooks is the system most US bookkeepers and CPAs already know. That means a larger pool of people who can take over your file, and no retraining when you hand it to a new firm. Digits runs a partner program for firms and says accountants can be invited in free, but the pool is smaller.
- A cheaper floor. QuickBooks starts at $0 with caps and $38 for a real single-user ledger. Digits starts at $65 with no free plan.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Digits if:
- You sell services, not goods, and inventory is not part of the business.
- More than five people need access, or you want advisors and auditors in the file without buying seats.
- You want bill pay and invoicing included rather than assembled from add-ons.
- You are comfortable that the top plan you can buy today is $100, and that some accrual features are still on the roadmap.
Choose QuickBooks Online if:
- You hold stock and need cost of goods sold to come out right.
- You want payroll, payments and accounting on one bill.
- You need project profitability, budgeting or a large third-party app list now, not later.
- Your accountant has told you they work in QuickBooks, and moving them is not free.
If neither fits, the usual alternatives are worth a look. Xero is the main direct rival to QuickBooks at a lower price, with multi-currency on its top plan; see our QuickBooks vs Xero comparison. At the very small end, Kick has a free tier for low transaction volumes. If you want an AI-native ledger that keeps cash and accrual books side by side from $30, compare Puzzle against QuickBooks as well. More options sit in our accounting software guide and the rest of our head-to-head comparisons.
Switching between them
Digits documents a direct sync from QuickBooks Online, which is the only automated path it publishes. Coming from Xero, from Puzzle or from anything else, the documented route is manual: import the chart of accounts by CSV or let Digits create one, connect banks, cards and integrations, enter opening balances as a manual journal entry, and set a start date per integration. QuickBooks Desktop users are told to run Intuit’s own tool into QuickBooks Online first, then use the sync.
Two limits matter more than the mechanics. Digits states that Plaid can pull at most two years of bank and credit card history, and that the import-all-historical-transactions option reaches back two years. Anything older stays in the system you are leaving. Digits publishes no migration timeline.
Going the other way, Intuit’s instructions for arriving from another system are to export your lists to Excel or CSV and load the chart of accounts before anything else, because products and services have to map to accounts that already exist or the import fails.
On timing, move at the start of a fiscal year where you can and a quarter boundary where you cannot, so one system holds one complete period. Keep read-only access to the old books through at least one tax filing, since neither vendor promises that reconciled history and document attachments arrive intact.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Digits cost?
Essentials is $65 a month and Core is $100 a month, billed monthly, with one subscription per business. A $250 Pro plan appears on the pricing page marked coming soon, so it cannot be bought today. Unlimited users are included on both available plans, and there is a 30-day free trial but no free plan.
Is Digits cheaper than QuickBooks Online?
For a team, usually yes. Digits Core is $100 a month with unlimited users, while the comparable QuickBooks plan, Plus, is $140 a month and includes five. QuickBooks is cheaper at the bottom, where Simple Start is $38 and Digits starts at $65.
Does Digits handle inventory?
No. Digits publishes no inventory module and names no inventory integration. A business that buys and resells physical goods needs QuickBooks Plus or another system with inventory costing.
Can Digits do accrual accounting?
Partly, today. Digits markets itself as an AI-native accrual ledger, and its automated schedules launched in May 2026 covering fixed assets and prepaid expenses. Its own announcement says revenue recognition and accrued expenses are still to come, so do not assume every accrual posts itself.
Can my accountant work in Digits?
Yes. Users are unlimited on every plan, so an accountant, an advisor or an auditor can be invited in without buying a seat, and Digits runs a partner program for firms with client-level permissions. The practical question is whether your accountant wants to: QuickBooks is the system most US firms already know.
